Mr. Craig Mercado
Principal
As a lifelong resident of Brooklyn, this neighborhood is in my blood. It is my great pleasure to lead St. Ephrem Catholic Academy. I have dedicated my life to Catholic education and I firmly believe that the mind, body, and soul should be equally fulfilled through education. I, along with our faculty, work tirelessly to live up to the long traditions established by St. Ephrem School and hope to build an institution that will make all members of our community proud.

Knowing that I am making a positive difference in the life of a child, partaking in their physical and emotional growth is the most gratifying gift I can receive. As an Educator, I always strive to do my very best, giving the students my absolute all. It is extremely important for me to create a positive, comfortable and secure environment for my students; one that supports their cognitive, social and emotional growth as they embark on their very first academic journey.

Helping students study meaningful things that are relevant to one’s life and interests is just as important as teaching the required curriculum. This motivates students to learn, and have a love for learning. Teaching provides an opportunity for me to learn and grow as an individual as well as an educator. As a teacher, I hope to instill a love for learning to all of my students.

Junior High Math
I have always wanted to be a teacher ever since second grade when Sr. Mary Augustine asked me to work with children in my class who were slow readers. With the exception of only two years in my career, I have been an 8th-grade homeroom teacher which means that I am responsible for high school admissions as well as all 8th-grade activities in addition to my academic classes. The most important thing I want my students to learn from me is that they are more than a grade on the report card, they are more than their reflection in a mirror; it’s who they are inside that counts.

Computer Teacher
I love to learn and teach something new every day, even if it is outside of the classroom. It brings me great satisfaction to explore the use of technology with students and help them to improve their self-learning skills. My goal is to teach the students the most current technological applications, such as Excel and Powerpoint to upperclassmen, and Microsoft Word to underclassmen. It is rewarding to know that every lesson I teach will have an impact on their future technological endeavors as well as fulfill their spiritual needs.

I spent 3 years training with the Orton Gillingham Academy for Practitioners and Educators and it has been such a rewarding experience to be able to help children who need a different way to learn. I also implemented a writing program for all students which I saw tremendous positive results. I am so happy to be on board in this new endeavor at St. Ephrem Catholic Academy.
